Hail Mary Strawberries

Sometimes I amuse myself with food, and this is one of those times.  In honor of the big game today, I decided to get a little festive in the kitchen.  Aren’t they cute?

These were pretty easy to make.  Just your basic chocolate covered strawberry to start with.  I like to use good quality semi-sweet chocolate for this.  For 10 strawberries, I melted about 1/3 of a bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips in a double boiler on the stove, but you can use the microwave or a mini crock pot if you prefer.  For the double boiler, you need a very small amount – about an inch – of water in the bottom of the pan, and then you put a bowl on top of that, which you put the chocolate in.   Then, viola! The heated water underneath melts the chocolate.

When using a double boiler, make sure the top bowl/pot is not touching the water underneath.  Also don’t let the water cook too rapidly – low is fine – because if any spatters out into your chocolate, the chocolate will seize up and it’s over.  Chocolate and water do not get along.  Once the chocolate is melted, just dip the washed and dried strawberries until they’re completely covered, and lay them onto a plate or cookie sheet covered with parchment paper or wax paper.  Put them in the refrigerator for the chocolate to harden while you make the icing needed for the laces.

I knew I didn’t need much icing, so I put a small amount of powdered sugar, maybe 1/4 c.,  into a bowl and added a few drops of milk.  Seriously, just a few drops.  It does not take much liquid here. I mixed that together, but it wasn’t coming together the way I wanted, so I added a little bit of soft butter and that helped.  I went back and forth with adding more sugar and more drops of milk until I got the consistency I needed.

Then I put the icing into a small zip top bag and cut off the corner so I could draw the lines.  When you cut the tip off the baggie, start with an extremely small snip because it does not take much.  You can always cut it bigger if you need.

Then, you’re all set to draw the lines and laces. (Seven, if you want to be regulation about it, but I ran out of room on some of mine and ended up with six.  Don’t tell the authorities!)

Laces out!

In small bowl, mix together approximately 1/4 c. of powdered sugar with a few drops of milk and a small dab of softened butter.  Put icing into small baggie and cut the tiny tip off one of the bottom corners of the baggie.   After the chocolate is set, draw the laces and lines with the baggie of icing.  Set, hike!
