Giant Bubbles

Giant BubblesHi! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted! We’re off for the summer now. This is our time to relax, get some things done that we’ve been piling onto the “to do” list, and do lots of fun activities! I have a goal, a “summer resolution,” if you will, to post once a week. I don’t know if it will actually happen, but one can dream, right?

This post is a recipe, but not for food. It’s for giant bubbles! We have made this with the kids for two summers now, and it works so great I wanted to share with you all. If you’re like us, there are just some days when you need something new to do. This is easy, low cost, and super fun! I found several recipes on Pinterest, but this method, from the Busy Kids Happy Mom blog, with just a few simple ingredients really worked for us!

Before I get into the “recipe,” I’ll tell you the method we used for the bubble wands. Our preferred method is to take two wooden spoons, or similar kitchen utensils and tie a string between the handles, approximately 16 inches long or so. Don’t measure! Then get another, longer string, approximately 30-36 inches. Tie the string to one of the spoon handles, string a small washer or nut on the string, and then tie the other end to the other spoon. The washer will hang down and when you hold the handles, you will have a triangle to use as your bubble blower!

Another thing we have tried is the two-straw method as described in the original blog by Busy Kids Happy Mom. You just thread the string through two straws and tie a knot to desired length. Then the straws are your handles. This way, you are getting your hands in the bubble solution every time. So it depends if your kids are into that or not! Whatever type of wand you decide to use, we have learned that in order for the bubbles to form, the entire string has to be wet (even the knots on the spoons).

Another crucial tip is that the solution works best if you let it set for at least an hour. It’s even better the next day and can be stored until…until you get tired of stepping over it in the garage. 😉

Ok, now on to the recipe itself. There’s one ingredient you might not be familiar with, glycerin. It can be easily found in the baking section of a craft store. It’s inexpensive and a small bottle will last you several batches. Also, be sure to use original blue Dawn soap.

Kids and adults will be wowed by the huge bubbles you can make with this!

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups water
  • 1/2 cup blue Dawn original dish soap
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 TBSP baking powder
  • 1 TBSP glycerin

Directions:

In a large dishpan or bucket, slowly mix the ingredients together. Scrape the bottom to get the cornstarch incorporated, but try not to get too many bubbles in it. Let the solution sit for at least one hour. Be patient, and it will pay off!
